London City Hall
City Hall in London, informally known as the "Leaning Tower of Pizzas" or "Fosters Nutsack" (see also 30 St Mary Axe), is the headquarters of the Greater London Authority and the Mayor of London. It stands on the south bank of the River Thames, in the More London development by Tower Bridge. Designed by Norman Foster, it opened in July 2002.
The building has an unusual bulbous shape, intended to reduce the building's surface area and thus improve energy efficiency. It has been compared variously to Darth Vader's helmet, a misshapen egg, a woodlouse or a motorcycle helmet. London Mayor Ken Livingstone referred to it as a "glass testicle". Its designers reportedly saw the building as a giant sphere hanging over the Thames, but opted for a more conventionally rooted building instead. The building has no front or back on conventional terms but derives its shape from a modified sphere.

"Vers une architecture"
Un livre important, "indispensable à la compréhension de la pensée architecturale moderne" et surtout un livre indispensable pour comprendre les pensées de Le Corbusier. "Vers une architecture" est certainement le livre phare de l’oeuvre littéraire de Le Corbusier. Ecrit dans un langage très simple et très communicatif, Le Corbusier lance un message aux architectes et expose à travers cet ouvrage ses règles d’édification : "L’architecture est le jeu magnifique des volumes sous la lumière".(1923)

St Paul's Cathedral
St Paul's Cathedral is an Anglican cathedral on Ludgate Hill, in the City of London, England and the seat of the Bishop of London. The present building dates from the 17th century, and is generally reckoned to be London's fifth St Paul's Cathedral, although the number is higher if every major mediæval reconstruction is counted as a new cathedral. The cathedral is one of London's most visited sites.

In disguise
Cardinal Place off Londons Victoria Street is a wonderful, airy shopping complex that opened a couple of years ago. Walking through it last weekend I spotted this vent but within moments of me starting to shoot, a security guard wandered over. "Excuse me, sir, but this is private property and you cant take photographs without a permit. You might be a terrorist in disguise".
Jobsworth was just doing his job so there was no point in arguing and anyway Id got the shot. But it is sad that these days you get stopped so often. Ironically, I never have a problem taking pictures at Londons Heathrow Airport. Ho hum.

In the top 10 most interesting shots searching for "london" of over 5 million results !!!!!
From the wikipedia:
London is the largest urban area and capital of England and the United Kingdom. At its core, the ancient City of London, to which the name historically belongs, still retains its limited mediaeval boundaries; but since at least the 19th century the name "London" has also referred to the whole metropolis which has developed around it. Today the bulk of this conurbation forms the London region of England and the Greater London administrative area, with its own elected mayor and assembly.
An important settlement for two millennia, Londons history goes back to its founding by the Romans. Since its settlement, London has been the centre of many important movements and phenomena throughout history such as the English Renaissance, the Industrial Revolution, and the Gothic Revival. In light of this, the city has become one of the most popular tourist destinations in the world which has increased over the years due to the citys economic growth. London boasts four World Heritage Sites; these are Palace of Westminster, the Tower of London, the historic settlement of Greenwich, and the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew. It is one of the worlds leading business, financial, and cultural centres, and its influence in politics, education, entertainment, media, fashion and the arts all contribute to its status as a major global city.
London has an official population of 7,512,400 (as of mid-2006) within the boundaries of Greater London and is the most populous municipality in the European Union. The urban area of London extends beyond the limits of Greater London and has a population of 8,278,251 (as of 2001). The metropolitan area is estimated to have a population of between 12 and 14 million.Londons diverse population draws from a wide range of peoples, cultures, and religions, and over 300 different languages are spoken within the city. It is an international transport hub, with five major international airports serving the area and a large port. It serves as the largest aviation hub in the world, and the multi-terminal Heathrow Airport carries more international passengers than any other airport in the world.
Greater London covers an area of 609 square miles (1,579 km²), making it the 37th largest urban area in the world. Its primary geographical feature is the Thames, a navigable river which crosses the city from the south-west to the east. The Thames Valley is a floodplain surrounded by gently rolling hills such as Parliament Hill, Addington Hills, and Primrose Hill. These hills presented no significant obstacle to the growth of London from its origins as a port on the north side of the river, and therefore London is roughly circular. Many of the highest points in London are located in the suburbs or on the boundaries with adjacent counties.
The Thames was once a much broader, shallower river with extensive marshlands; at high tide, its shores reached five times their current width. Since the Victorian era It has been extensively embanked, and many of its London tributaries now flow underground. The Thames is a tidal river, and London is vulnerable to flooding. The threat has increased over time due to a slow but continuous rise in high water level by the slow tilting of Britain (up in the north and down in the south) caused by post-glacial rebound. In 1974, a decade of work began on the construction of the Thames Barrier across the Thames at Woolwich to deal with this threat. While the barrier is expected to function as designed until roughly 2030, concepts for its future enlargement or redesign are already being discussed.

The Weather Project
This a view Ólafur Elíasson's The Weather Project, an art installation at Tate Modern in London, 2004.
In this photo I've made the visitors the main subject (it was Elíasson's intention that they became part of the work), omitting the centre piece, which was a large 'half sun' at the end of the hall. The ceiling was mirrored which is why people are lying on the floor looking up. The air was mist-filled and the light really was that colour!

London Eye Red Colors
EXPLORE #427.
View of the The Red London Eye with red color from red reflection westminster bridge
London, UK , England. A metropolitan Urban , City of London
London Eye, also known as the Millennium Wheel, is the tallest (135 metres (443 ft)) Ferris wheel in Europe, and has become the most popular paid tourist attraction in the UK, visited by over 3 million people a year.
The London Eye is located at the western end of Jubilee Gardens, on the South Bank of the River Thames in London, England, between Westminster Bridge and Hungerford Bridge.
A breathtaking feat of design and engineering, passengers in the London Eye's capsules can see up to 40 kilometres in all directions.
The London Eye is the vision of David Marks and Julia Barfield, a husband and wife architect team. The wheel design was used as a metaphor of the turning of the century.
During the bidding process of the 2012 Olympic Games, the London bid organisers announced the Olympic emblem would be attached to the Eye for the duration of the 2012 Summer Olympics.[4]
In August of 2007, it was announced that London Eye could be temporarily renamed "The McCartney Eye" after Sir Paul McCartney of the Beatles. The renaming would coincide with the release of a McCartney related DVD set titled "The McCartney Years".[
The London Eye is the vision of David Marks and Julia Barfield, a husband and wife architect team. The wheel design was used as a metaphor of the turning of the century.
British Airways was the main sponsor of the London Eye until February 2008 and up until November 2005 were joint shareholders with Marks Barfield Architects and The Tussauds Group. British Airways also privately funded the London Eye project from the early stages of conception.
The London Eye is now operated by the London Eye Company Limited, a Merlin Entertainments Group Company.

Polaroid
Test shot with the new Polaroid SX-70 I've got from eBay, rather a clever little Polaroid, it's surprisingly small too, I rather like how easy it is to focus and how it look through the viewfinder, much better than looking through my Lubitel 166B viewfinder (quick note - i didn't like having the border on the Polaroid so I decided to just crop to the picture itself, nice and clean).
I managed to modified the 600 films into the SX-70, removing the ND filter on the sensor and set the camera to the darkest setting on the sensor, picture still came out slightly overexposed but not so much.
Who need Photoshop?
Edited - I've notice due to Polaroid announced that they won't be doing instant film anymore, this lead to an increase number of people searching "Polaroid" on Flickr, and since this polaroid came first out of the list of search, I take this chance to show you the Save Polaroid site;
"This site will document the aftermath of this announcement and will serve as a home-base for the effort to convince another company to begin producing the cherished technology that Polaroid has so carelessly abandoned, this is not about saving Polaroid, the company, rather the remarkable invention of Edwin Land, the instant film that made Polaroid a household name."

Watching the fireworks
...in Leicester Square during the Chinese New Year celebrations.
This image is being used on an album cover.
I love the expression on this woman's face as a cloud of firework smoke engulfs the crowd, and the way she presses the youngest child into her scarf. I'd never seen a firework display in daylight before; they aren't much to see, but the noise and the smoke are very striking. And they are what this family are reacting to.
It was a lucky capture. A gap opened up in the crowd. I saw the expression on the woman's face, took a couple of steps towards her, and realised that if I went any closer I would distract her. So I zoomed in as close as my lens would allow and fired off a few shots. I've cropped the image quite hard to isolate the central family group. The shot I took a second later didn't have the girl with the pink hood in the foreground, but the woman's face had changed, and the photo doesn't have the same dynamism.

Red Woman In Tube
John, you bloody well better love this, because it took bloody age to focus through the viewfinder of the Lubitel, and sitting beside a fat Yanks whose legs is rubbing against me is not helping.
Its all guesstimate, since I have 200 ISO film, I can able to set the shutter speed to 1/60th of a second at F/4.5 (max), the nicest thing about cross processing is that even if a picture wasnt exposed properly, the cross processing allowed to make the image more vivid and brighter, thus giving the impression that its actually exposed properly.

Thou shalt not read NME
Ive only just started using the LOMO Lubitel 166B Ive won from eBay, I didnt use it much because its not as conventional as the LOMO LC-A when you can simply set the focus, and click while this one take a while to see the focus properly. More to boot trying to keep it levels as looking down the viewfinder is quite distorting, but bloody hell, the sheer quality of detail in a single negatives is astounding, clearly the biggest advantage in the medium format world (I just wish it wasnt so bloody inconventional to use coming from a point and shoot film cameras).
Ive just got back from Clapham on my bike when I took this shot, hence why I look quite awkward (and the fact I hasnt a proper shave yet).

Early Spring in the air
I made a rare visit to Central London yesterday, though that probably won't be obvious from most of the pics I took there taken mainly in Hyde Park.
It was almost warm springlike weather and Spring flowers sprouting everywhere.

Watching life pass by...well, just the train anyway ;-}
Underground Life
The London Underground is a metro system serving a large part of Greater London and neighbouring areas of Essex, Hertfordshire and Buckinghamshire in England. It is the world's oldest underground railway system. It is usually referred to as the Underground or the Tube - the latter deriving from the shape of the system's deep-bore tunnels - although about 55% of the network is above ground.
The Underground has 268 stations and approximately 400 km (250 miles) of track,[1] making it the longest metro system in the world by route length,[4] and one of the most served in terms of stations. In 2007, over one billion passenger journeys were recorded.
Transport for London (TfL) was created in 2000 as the integrated body responsible for London's transport system. It replaced London Regional Transport. It assumed control of London Underground Limited in July 2003.
The Underground has been featured in many movies and television shows, including Sliding Doors, Tube Tales and Neverwhere. The London Underground Film Office handles over 100 requests per month. The Underground has also featured in music such as The Jam's "Down in the Tube Station at Midnight" and in literature such as the graphic novel V for Vendetta. Popular legends about the Underground being haunted persist to this day.
The Underground currently sponsors and contributes to the arts via its Platform for Art and Poems on the Underground projects. Poster and billboard space (and in the case of Gloucester Road tube station, an entire disused platform) is given over to artwork and poetry to "create an environment for positive impact and to enhance and enrich the journeys of ... passengers".[
The London Underground's 11 lines are the Bakerloo line, Central line, Circle line, District line, Hammersmith & City line, Jubilee line, Metropolitan line, Northern line, Piccadilly line, Victoria line, and Waterloo & City line. Until 2007 there was a twelfth line, the East London line, but this has closed for conversion work and will be transferred to the London Overground when it reopens in 2010.

Into the night
Like a piece to the puzzle that falls into place,
You could tell how we felt from the look on our face,
we were spinning in circles with the moon in our eyes,
We forgot where we were and we lost track of time,
And we sang to the wind as we sat through the night!
This song is amazing .... recommended:

[NOT] banksy, provocative as always
theres this wicked wall in shorditch, cracked crusty concrete wall stained by years of weathering and all... and then there are these big green/blue wrinkly old men lined up on the wall (i think there were 5) with their weary and empathetic eyes looking down upon you.
quite eerie in the dead of night. went back to try shoot it in the day, but ha! wouldnt you know it, the alley was turned into a flea market and a million people were there for the brick lane festival. thisll have to do.
** UPDATE: not banksy... MR. YU is the provocative one : ) **

Sunkissed London
Was walking over the Millenium bridge this weekend when this wonderful light appeared in the horizon.. the buildings were very far away hence the poor resolution, but really liked the magical colours and the well defined sun rays..

Relaxing in the Art World of London British Museum
The British Museum is a museum of human history and culture in London. Its collections, which number more than 7 million objects, are amongst the largest and most comprehensive in the world and originate from all continents, illustrating and documenting the story of human culture from its beginning to the present.
It is a point of controversy whether museums should be allowed to possess artefacts taken from other countries, and the British Museum is a notable target for criticism. The Elgin Marbles and the Benin Bronzes are among the most disputed objects in its collections, and organisations have been formed demanding the return of both sets of artefacts to their native countries of Greece and Nigeria respectively.

Induhvidual
Estherase pointed this chap out to me in the Victoria and Albert Museum. It's a sculpture by David Reekie, entitled 'A Captive Audience?', with an explicitly political subtext. (See estherase's link below).
In February it was no 1 on the explore page, and now it's fallen offf entirely. I'll have to pimp it a bit!
