The second floor under the restaurant. La Habana, Cuba.
Here my previous color version www.flickr.com/photos/boqueron/417694451/in/set-721575945...
It's an abandoned palace ( as nearly all buildings in La Habana are ) were families do live. The children were - as pictured -sitting, drawing and reading. There is a restaurant upstairs: LA GUARIDA. One of the very few "private" restaurants were only foreigners eat ( the prices are absolutely unavoidables for locals). The children in the picture live there with their families. Each family occupies a room (!!) of the palace. Nobody cares for the building ( they just can't afford any expense). On the hall of the basement, another familiy was playing cards next to a group of neighbours that were fixing a, very, very, old, car..
Oh, I forgot ! The first wall to be seen just to the right, after entering the basement of the Palace, was painted with an enormous revolutionary text, together with the face of "Che Guevara". All this in a totally "spontaneous" and "amateurish" style..

Melhor assim
----------------------------------------
One of my favourite places in Habana Vieja is the Café Habana, on the corner of Calles Amargura and Mercaderes. It's a café in the real sense of the word - it only sells coffee. Excellent, piping hot expressos for 1 CUC (Convertible Peso) - about US$1.
One interesting detail was a small poster explaining that as a "special offer", between 9am and noon the price was in Cuban Pesos (about 4% of the CUC). It seemed that the offer in fact operated all day long since, unlike most of the tourist cafés and restaurants, there were always Cubans there enjoying a coffee.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I've already mentioned that dogs seem to share the space with humans everywhere in Cuba. Even on the staircase of the Capitol building - headquarters of the Ministry of Science, Technology and the Environment, and where there's a rare cybercafé with (slow) Internet access, for $3 per half-hour. Nobody bothers them.

Repainting a classic car
Havana, Cuba - A group of Cubans work in the streets to repaint a classic American car. Classic American cars are seen throughout Cuba, a throwback to the days before the embargo. Before the Cuban revolution, there was a strong US presence on the island - both culturally and commercially. After the revolution, trade ceased and the influx of cars stopped. With a limited supply of new cars due to embargoes and limited buying power due to the economic situation under communism, Cubans have held onto the vintage automobiles by necessity for many decades. As a result, Cuba is in the unique position that pre-1959 cars are the standard, rather than an exception, although this is changing. These cars are generally referred to as yank tanks or maquinas and often used as taxis.

Santeria Woman Smoking a Habano Cigar, Havana, Cuba
Santeria or "La Regla Lucumm" (Lucumm's Rule) as it's also known originated in the region of west Africa. "La Regla Lucumm" is the traditional faith of the Yoruba inhabitants. This religion sprung from the traditional slave trades that occurred in early days of the religion. The Yoruban natives were abducted from their country and unwillingly transported to the Caribbean countries of Cuba, Haiti and Brazil, Trinidad, Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic among other Caribbean islands.
The Yoruba people were abducted and transported to these islands without regard for the beliefs, traditions or their lives but the abductors failed to realize that the inner faith and passion that was within the hearts of these people were very powerful and no abductors had control over their faith. These people brought with them their traditions, their souls and the powerful faith in their deities
When they arrived at their Caribbean destinations they were unwillingly baptized within the Roman Catholic Faith and forced to leave behind all of their traditional beliefs and practices. These people were resourceful, intelligent, committed and appreciative to their Santeria Religion that they managed to come up with a creative way to fuse and conceal their beliefs within the Roman Catholic Church by choosing a catholic saint and associating the Saint to each of the Orisha of their traditional practices.

Cuba leaves something indelible on ones soul - never, it seems, has there ever been such a beautiful, exuberant, and at times despairing prison.
